Significance of the World Ocean Day
It is informative to mark June 8th as the International World Ocean Day to wake up and recognize the value of the ocean and its role in supporting life on Earth. Worldwide, oceans cover more than 70 percent of the total surface of the Earth and contain more than ninety-seven percent of the total volume of water. This region is now recognized to encompass an amazingly rich and diverse blend of life forms, including many still unexplored areas of the globe and they are fundamental to the climatic and meteorological processes of the Earth.
A range of anthropogenic factors also pose a significant risk to the oceans, including emissions, pollution of waters, overfishing, and climate change. Sewage and industrial wastes that originate from the coastal region pollute the water which is detrimental to sea life and other marine organisms. Specifically, overfishing leads to the decline of fish stocks, while climate change results in the production of heat and the formation of an acidic environment that negatively impacts coral reefs and other related marine species.
