What is World Braille Day?
Since January 4th is Louis Braille’s birthday, we commemorate World Braille Day on that day each year. He is the man who created Braille. Louis was born in France in 1809, and a childhood accident caused him to go blind. But he adapted to his new way of life very quickly. Louis developed a reading and writing system at age 15, based on Charles Barbier’s night writing system. Today, Braille is how we recognise Louis’ system. Braille has been modified over time and is now widely used and easier to read!
World Braille Day Observances
– In the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the Braille system is mentioned. According to World Braille Usage’s third edition, Braille codes exist in 133 languages.
– Despite not being a language, Braille is a system of tactile symbols made up of raised dots arranged in cells. Three rows and two columns make up this cell’s matrix.
– According to the United Nations website, “World Braille Day, observed since 2019, is observed to raise awareness of the significance of Braille as a means of communication in the full realisation of the human rights for blind and partially sighted people.”
